The Templar and Hospitaller sites in the Aveyron

When the Templars settled on the Larzac in the middle of the twelfth century, they founded the Commandery of Sainte-Eulalie de Cernon and extend their powers to the Couvertoirade, The Cavalry and Viala Pas de Compiegne. For 150 years, they will consolidate scattered Larzac populations around these sites and develop the agro-pastoral vocation of the whole region. When the Order of the Temple is suppressed by the Pope in 1312, all goods are sent to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. It is the Hospital that will strengthen all the sites including the Commandery of Saint Eulalie, because of the climate of insecurity at the time of the Hundred Years War. Today, these sites Templars and Hospitallers are preserved and enhanced by the Conservatoire Larzac Templars and Hospitallers.

The five sites Templars and Hospitallers of Aveyron open to the public are:

The Cavalry
The Couvertoirade
Saint-Jean d'Alcas
Sainte-Eulalie de Cernon
Le Viala du Pas Jaux
